About the teacher

Mark Wheeler is a Registered Art Psychotherapist who specialized in Child & Family Therapy in the National Health Service, working with children and families for over 30 years. Mark was the first British photography graduate to qualify as an Art Therapist and developed techniques using photographs in individual psychotherapy and family therapy, which he has taught to professionals in many mental health and care settings. Additional training enabled Mark to develop narrative and systemic approaches to working with photos alongside psychodynamic and attachment models.

During the Covid pandemic lockdowns Mark developed Behavioural Activation Therapeutic Photography as a response to treating anxiety within Covid restrictions. Outcome measures demonstrated these outdoor sessions to be as effective as 1:1 therapy in clinic.

Mark has been honoured with a Fellowship of the Royal Photographic Society (FRPS) for his work examining the psychological aspects of creating and viewing photographs after previously being awarded the Associateship of the Royal Photographic Society (ARPS) for his analogue photography. Mark now lives in Scotland where he continues to practice online as an Art Psychotherapist, clinical supervisor, trainer and workshop facilitator.
